Budget Tuning Tips for a 99 G20
I say 99 because that's what I have. Some tips may work for other years and will be stated as such. I am only Informing you of ways to save money while making your car faster, I am not responsible in any way for what you do to your car.
The first performance modification you should do to your car (any year) is timing advance. timing is the best bang for the buck for one reason, IT'S FREE. All you need is a timing light and a socket set. The best instructions I found are from b15sentra.net. HOW TO ADJUST TIMING Follow those instructions and you should have no problems. The first thing you have to do is put 91 or octane in you tank then decide where you want to set your timing. You will see gains anywhere fro 16*-19*. I have mine set at 19*.
The second performance modification you should do to your car (any year) is a Cold Air Intake (CAI). The CAI takes air from outside of the engine bay where it is not heated by the engine. I used a Stillen CAI which works really well but If I had to do it over again I would 2.5"mandrel bent piping from a company like Summit or Jegs and make my own. I found a great do it your self on a Honda site that would of helped a lot. HOW TO CAI I used a similar set up to finish where Stillen left off with a warm air style intake. HOW TO WAI The only adjustments you would need is a MAF adapter. The CAI will make most of the difference and is more DIY friendly since you won't have to weld, but you may need to cut the pass through hole a little bigger. If you don't feel like going through the whole hassle of designing a CAI you can always just buy a MAF adapter and filter and you'll have a WAI. These setups will run you anywhere from $25-$100 depending on how well you shop and how crazy you go. My Stillen CAI was $225 and others run around the same price that's at least $100 savings. E-bay always has filters and adapter listed cheap.
CAMS
Another great bang for the buck modification for your car (94'-99'G20) is the 91' intake cam. This cam is actually available in any 91'-93 sr20de motor (also known as high-port sr20de). The 91' intake cam has a little more lift and duration then a 94'-99' (low-port) and will give a few more HP on the top end. 91' CAM COMPARISON You can find a used 91'-93 Intake cam for around $100 or less, they are fairly easy to find as alot of people swap them out for aftermarket cams ($500+) I got mine from JGYCUSTOMS, a great guy and a lot of help. JWT cams run around $500 so even though the power is less the price is 1/5 and you will still be ahead of the game.
ECU
(99' G20) When you see all the extra power your now making in the higher RPMs you won't want to stop accelerating even as you hit the 7100rpm rev-limiter, and why should you. Well with the introduction of the 99' G20 came the 7100 rpm Rev-limiter, but it wasn't always that way every G20 before had a 7500rpm rev-limiter. Well If you Get a hold of an ECU from a 94-96 G20 you can too. They can be had from salvage yard for around $100, and worth every penny if you have a 91' cam. A good place to look is CAR-PARTS.COM. The one draw back is you will get a service engine light along with it since the emissions systems changed, The light is only there to tell you the emissions are malfunctioning, your car will not have any problems. If you can't deal with that annoying light in you face there is a fix you just need to change the O2 sensor and do a little rewire. HOW TO REWIRE
HEADER
The header I went with is the Pacesetter. Pacesetter is an exact copy of the first generation Hot Shot header. Although it makes less power than the latest edition of the Hot shot it is a definite improvement over stock and it is about1/3 the price of the Hot Shot. For $150 you get a painted black header that will rust in a few months, unless you do as I did. When you get the header you need to strip off all the black shipping paint, then go to Home Depot and buy 1200* barbeque paint. Give the header a few light coats and install. after a week or so you may see some paint come off, just lightly sand and paint when cold. I have had my header for over 6 months now and it is still in excellent condition.
With these few Modifications you should be good for around 130HP at the wheels for around $400. And if you went the more expensive way you would probably have around 145Hp and be close to $2000 in dept.
